History

Alfredo Capitanini, the Italian immigrant who never worked in any restaurant before coming to the United States, opened The Italian Village in 1927. His philosophy was uncomplicated: make good, simple food, serve it in ample portions, and offer it with warm Italian courtesy. A menu once read: “ Spaghetti with Meatballs: 40 cents.”

The idea of combining authentic dishes with great value marked the beginning of the Capitanini family’s tradition of culinary excellence that continues to this day, and makes Italian Village the oldest (and most unique) Italian eatery in Chicago.

Through these doors at 71 West Monroe walked Alfredo’s wife, Ada, the matronly patron of the arts, who supported and fed hungry performers from the Lyric Opera. Years later at the Village bar, sat the second generation of Capitaninis, Ray, Frank, and Ave, who created what is today the most celebrated wine list in the Midwest. And in these halls Al & Gina, (pictured above) the third Capitanini Generation, now manage the three surprising restaurants of Italian Village with wit, skill and style. They are making sure that The Village, La Cantina and Vivere are ready for the day they will be handed down to the next generation of Capitaninis.

Italian Village is the remarkable result of one family’s commitment to each other, and of the enduring philosophy that great food, service and décor are the consistent hallmarks of a restaurant that celebrates the very best of the Italian epicurean experience.
